Small Rooms, Tight Sites

A lot of Como housing is older and closer together than in the southern suburbs. Kitchens are often small, the laundry is off the kitchen, and the only window looks at a neighbouring wall. In the units and townhouses near Canning Highway it is tighter still.

Small kitchens are not a problem, but they need a different approach. Storage goes vertical, the bench depth matters more, and every appliance has to earn its place. A design that works in a 20 square metre kitchen will not work in a 9 square metre one.

Character Homes and What to Keep

The older houses around Como Beach and the streets off the highway have details worth keeping: jarrah floors, high ceilings, picture rails, and door frames that are not a standard size. Renovating those houses is partly a decision about what stays.
